Édouard Stephan discovered NGC 463 = St III-1 on 16 Dec 1871 with the 31" reflector at the Marseille Observatory. His position is accurate.

400/500mm - 17.5" (12/23/92): very faint, fairly small, elongated 5:2 SSW-NNE, very small brighter core, extremely faint extensions. NGC 473 lies 20' NE.
