Lewis Swift discovered NGC 4447 = Sw. VI-44, along with NGC 4446 close northwest, on 17 Apr 1887 and recorded "eeF; pS; R; ee difficult." His position is 7 sec of RA following and 2' north of MCG +02-32-073 = PGC 40979 (comparable offset as NGC 4446).

400/500mm - 18" (4/5/03): very faint, very small, round, 0.4'. Slightly smaller of a close pair with NGC 4446 1.6' WNW. In a galaxy-rich area 12.5' WSW of NGC 4459 and 6' SW of a mag 9.6 star.

600/800mm - 24" (5/29/14): faint to fairly faint, small, round, 25" diameter, weak concentration. Forms a pair with NGC 4446 1.6' WNW. Located 12' WSW of NGC 4459.
