William Herschel discovered NGC 4434 = H II-497 on 28 Dec 1785 (sweep 498) and noted "pF, vS." Heinrich d'Arrest measured an accurate micrometric position on two nights (used in the NGC).
400/500mm - 17.5" (4/21/90): moderately bright, small, round, small very bright core dominates small round halo, sharp stellar nucleus. Located 35' WNW of M49. NGC 4416 lies 20' SW. UGC 7580 is 7' SE but I didn't look for this faint galaxy.
