John Herschel discovered NGC 4226 = h1155 on 19 Mar 1828 and recorded "F; S; lE; the second of 2 in field [with NGC 4217]."

300/350mm - 13.1" faint, small, elongated NW-SE. Forms a pair with NGC 4217 7' WNW.
