Lewis Swift discovered NGC 4040 = Sw. VI-41 on 30 Mar 1887 and noted "forms nearly a square with 3 stars". His position and description is a good match with UGC 7013.
400/500mm - 17.5" (5/11/02): faint, fairly small, slightly elongated NW-SE, 0.8'x0.7', broad weak concentration. An isosceles triangle with sides 2'/2'/1' consisting of mag 12.5 stars is 2' SE.
