William Herschel discovered NGC 4037 = H III-77 = h1051 on 8 Apr 1784 (sweep 187) and recorded "eF, pL, R, r." JH made two observations and measured an accurate position.
400/500mm - 17.5" (5/19/01): very faint, moderately large, low surface brightness, ill-defined, ~2' diameter, slightly elongated N-S, very weak concentration. Located 5' W of mag 9 SAO 99915.
