Ralph Copeland, while an assistant at Birr Castle, discovered NGC 3754 and 3 other members of "Copeland's Septet" on 5 Apr 1874. He noted "vF; R" and labeled it Theta on the constructed sketch made on 13 Apr 1876. See NGC 3753.

400/500mm - 17.5" (5/11/96): one of the three most difficult members of Copeland's Septet appears extremely faint and small, round. Difficult to resolve from brighter NGC 3753 just 40" SW of center. A mag 12 star is 1.0' N.

900/1200mm - 48" (4/16/15): fairly faint to moderately bright, small, slightly elongated N-S, 0.4'x0.3', small bright core. Situated just off the northeast side of NGC 3753.
