William Herschel discovered NGC 3654 = H II-880 on 6 Apr 1793 (sweep 1036) and recorded "F, S, lE from sp to nf, bM." His position matches UGC 6407.

400/500mm - 17.5" (4/22/95): fairly faint, fairly small, elongated 2:1 SW-NE, brighter along the major axis, very small bright core. Situated midway betwen a mag 12 star 3.1' NE and a mag 13 star 3.4' SW of center.
