John Herschel discovered NGC 3514 = h3313 on 22 Mar 1835 and noted "vF; pL; R; vgvlbM." His position is 15 tsec west of ESO 570-001.
400/500mm - 18" (3/5/05): faint, fairly small, elongated 3:2 ~E-W, 1.0'x0.7'. Broadly concentrated with a slightly brighter middle. Located 1.1° SE of mag 4.1 Alpha Crateris.
