William Herschel discovered NGC 3304 = H III-615 = h729 on 17 Mar 1787 (sweep 713) and noted "eF, vS, er." On 11 Mar 1831 (sweep 331), John Herschel noted, "vF; S; psbM; 12"."

400/500mm - 17.5" (4/9/94): faint, fairly small, elongated 2:1 NNW-SSE, sharply concentrated with small bright core surrounded by faint extensions. A mag 14 star is 2.1' E. NGC 3294 lies 18' SW.
