John Herschel discovered NGC 3164 = h679 on 9 Feb 1831 (sweep 323) and noted "eF; R: vglbM; 15 arc seconds." His single position matches UGC 5527.
400/500mm - 18" (4/10/04): very faint, fairly small, elongated ~3:2 N-S, 0.7'x0.5'. Low surface brightness with very little concentration. Located 11' SW of mag 8.5 HD 88828.
