Ormond Stone discovered NGC 3146 = LM 1-168 in 1886 with the 26" refractor at Leander McCormick Observatory. His rough position (nearest min of RA) is coincidentally a near match with ESO 567-023 = PGC 29663.

400/500mm - 18" (4/10/04): moderately bright, fairly small, round, 0.8' diameter, increases to a 15" bright core and a quasi-stellar nucleus. The edge of the halo is well-defined. Located 3.9' S of mag 8.9 SAO 178507.
