John Herschel discovered NGC 3111 = h667 on 17 Mar 1828 (sweep 138) and noted "pB; R; smbM; 20"." His mean position from 3 sweeps matches UGC 5441.
400/500mm - 17.5" (4/15/99): fairly faint, fairly small, round, 0.8' diameter. Weak concentration to center, very faint stellar nucleus at moments. Forms eastern vertex of an equilateral triangle with two mag 11/11.5 stars 4.3' SW and 4.0' NW.
