Édouard Stephan discovered NGC 3049 = St XII-37 on 20 Mar 1882. His position is accurate.

400/500mm - 17.5" (4/15/93): fairly faint, moderately large, elongated 3:2 SSW-NNE, weak concentration. A mag 11 star is 3.4' NE of center and a mag 14 star lies 1.9' SW of center.
