Albert Marth discovered NGC 2731 = m 143 on 3 Mar 1864 and noted "F, vS, R." His position is 1.3' NW of UGC 4741 = PGC 25376.

400/500mm - 17.5" (3/29/89): faint, very small, oval WSW-ENE, 0.6'x0.4'. Has an unusual appearance as a mag 13 star is nearly attached at the ENE edge 0.4' from center.
