John Herschel discovered NGC 2082 = h2945 on 30 Nov 1834 and recorded "pF, L, R, vlbM, 2'." On a later sweep he added "B, L, R, glbM, 90", has a *10m 2' dist 25° south-following." His position and decsription matches ESO 086-021 = PGC 17609.
300/350mm - 14" (4/7/16 - Coonabarabran, 178x): fairly bright, moderately large, round, 1.3' diameter, irregular surface brightness, slightly mottled like a face on spiral. A mag 12 star is 2.5' ESE and two mag 11.5 stars are 8' WNW. Shines through the north edge of the LMC.
