John Herschel discovered NGC 1842 = h2772 on 20 Dec 1835 and described as "eF, the preceding of two [with NGC 1844 = h2773]." His position is accurate.
600/800mm - 24" (11/18/12 - Magellan Observatory, Australia): fairly faint, moderately large, irregular shape, 25" diameter, no resolution. Forms a pair with brighter NGC 1844 3.4' SSE.
