William Herschel discovered NGC 1678 = H III-502 on 1 Feb 1786 (sweep 518) and called "vF, S." His position is less than 1' S of CGCG 394-020 = PGC 16179.

300/350mm - 13.1" (11/29/86): faint, small, slightly elongated, small bright core. A mag 12 star is close off western edge 1.0' from core. NGC 1670 lies 28' WSW.
