John Herschel discovered NGC 1484 = h2596 on 28 Nov 1837 and recorded "vF, L, E, vgvlbM, 2'." His position is 1' S of ESO 359-006 = PGC 14071.
400/500mm - 18" (12/30/08): faint, thin edge-on ~6:1 E-W, 1.5'x0.25', low even surface brightness with no noticeable core. Located at the SE edge of the Fornax I cluster.
