William Herschel discovered NGC 1354 = H III-487 = h2547 on 30 Dec 1785 (sweep 499) and recorded "vF, S, E." JH called it "vF, S, lE, glbM, 25 arcsec." The NGC position is accurate.
400/500mm - 18" (11/23/05): this galaxy was a pleasant surprise as it appeared moderately bright and large, very elongated 3:1 NW-SE, 1.4'x0.3'. Contains a fairly bright bulging core with fainter extensions that fade and taper at the tips (spindle shape). A mag 14 star lies off the SE end, 1.2' S of center.
