?douard Stephan discovered NGC 1226 = St X-16 on 6 Dec 1879 with the 31" reflector at Marseille Observatory. His position is accurate. This galaxy was apparently first discovered by d'Arrest on 17 Sep 1865, but due to a transcription error his position is 1-hour of RA too small and falls on a blank piece of sky. See NGC 832.
400/500mm - 17.5" (1/1/92): fairly faint, fairly small, round, bright core. Forms a pair with NGC 1227 4' SSE.
