?douard Stephan discovered NGC 1005 = St III-17 on 9 Dec 1871 with the 31" reflector at the Marseille Observatory. His position matches CGCG 539-071 = PGC 10062. Sixth in a group of 6 NGC galaxies discovered by Stephan.
400/500mm - 17.5" (11/1/86): fairly faint, very small, round, bright core. Located in the NGC 995-1005 group.
