?douard Stephan discovered NGC 1001 = St III-16 on 8 Dec 1871 with the 31" reflector at the Marseille Observatory. His position is accurate. Fifth in a group of 6 NGC galaxies discovered by Stephan.

400/500mm - 17.5" (11/1/86): faint, small, very elongated WNW-ESE. An extremely faint mag 15.5 star is at the west end or an extremely faint companion (appears elongated on the POSS). A mag 13.5 star is 1.4' SE. NGC 999 lies 4.7' W in the NGC 995-1005 group.
