Stephane Javelle discovered IC 983 = J. 1-275, along with IC 982, on 27 May 1891.
400/500mm - 17.5" (5/23/98): not seen initially as I was looking for a large object, but at 280x I picked up a small 20" glow just 1.5' NW of mag 8.6 SAO 100889. This was the small core -- the large, low surface brightness halo was overpowered by the nearby bright star. I started to look for nearby IC 982 2.6' SW but the skies began to cloud over and observing was cut short.
