Stephane Javelle discovered IC 982 = J. 1-274, along with IC 983, on 27 May 1891.

400/500mm - 18" (5/3/08): fairly faint, fairly small, round, weak concentration, 35" diameter. Forms the SW member of an Arp pair with IC 983 2.5' NNE. Located 2.7' SW of a mag 9 star that detracts from viewing. NGC 5490 lies 9' S and other fainter galaxies are in the field (see notes for NGC 5490).
