Lewis Swift discovered IC 709 = Sw. IX-29 on 11 May 1890 and recorded "eeF; S; R. 2nd of 4 [with IC 708, 711 and 712]."
400/500mm - 17.5" (4/22/95): very faint, very small, round, 20" diameter, very small brighter core. A mag 15 star is just 23" NW of center. Located 2.7' SW of IC 708 in the core of AGC 1314.
