Stephane Javelle discovered IC 612 = J. 2-679, along with IC 613 and 615 on 18 Apr 1893 with the 30-inch refractor at the Nice Observatory.
400/500mm - 17.5" (5/19/01): extremely faint and small, round, 15" diameter. Forms the northern vertex of a small triangle with two mag 13 stars 40" SSW and 46" SE. Located in the core of AGC 1016 with IC 613 lies 2.7' S and IC 615 4.2' NE.
