Stephane Javelle discovered IC 5231 = J. 3-1418 on 9 Oct 1895. His micrometric position is accurate.
400/500mm - 18" (9/26/11): faint to fairly faint, small, irregularly round, 20" diameter. Has a relatively high surface brightness with a very small brighter nucleus. Located 0.9° SW of NGC 7332/7339, a distinctive pair of edge-on galaxies. PGC 1685715, an extremely compact companion just 40" W, was not seen.
