Royal Frost discovered IC 5092 = F. 1217 on a plate taken on 19 Sep 1903 at Harvard's Arequipa station using the Bruce 24" photographic refractor. The galaxy was described as "pL, E, mbM."

600/800mm - 30" (10/10/15 - OzSky): at 394x; IC 5092 has an unusual appearance. It is moderately bright and large, containing a central bar oriented E-W surrounded by a large low surface brightness halo with a hint of spiral structure. Located 17' NW of mag 6.3 HD 202299 and 41' SE of NGC 7020, the brightest member of a small galaxy group (LGG 443).
