DeLisle Stewart discovered IC 4720 = D.S. 472 on a plate taken on 14 Sep 1901 at Harvard's Arequipa Station. He noted "cF, S, eE at 165°, cbM."

600/800mm - 30" (11/3/10 - Coonabarabran, 264x): fairly faint, moderately large, elongated 7:2 NNW-SSE, 1.8'x0.5', slightly brighter core. A star is superimposed NNW of the core. Located 8.5' NW of brighter and larger IC 4721, though both spirals have roughly similar position angles and axial ratios. Located in a fairly rich star field.
