DeLisle Stewart discovered IC 4717 = D.S. 470 on a plate taken on 14 Sep 1901 at Harvard's Arequipa Station. He noted "F, S, eE at 95°, stell N."

600/800mm - 30" (11/3/10 - Coonabarabran, 264x): moderately bright, very elongated ~5:1 E-W, 1.3'x0.3', somewhat concentrated to a very small, slightly brighter nucleus. Located in a fairly rich star field with a number of brighter mag 10 stars including mag 9.3 SAO 245539 situated 6' SW.
