Stephane Javelle discovered IC 4342 = J. 3-1279, along with IC 4343, 4344, 4345, 4346, 4348 and 4349, on 15 Jun 1895.

400/500mm - 17.5" (6/8/96): very faint, very small, round, 20" diameter. Located just south of a small group of stars including mag 8.8 SAO 83071 3.3' NNE and mag 9.2 SAO 83068 4' N. First in a group of 7 IC galaxies and HCG 69!
