Lewis Swift discovered IC 4299 = Sw. XI-159, along with IC 4296, on 30 Dec 1897 and reported it as "eeeF; eeS; like D * one nebulous." Howe examined the field in 1900 and noted "of this the discoverer says "like a D *, one nebulous." I cannot perceive this appearance." Howe was correct - there is no nearby star, despite Swift including it in a short paper on "Remarkable Nebulae" in the 1902 Popular Astronomy.
