Hermann Kobold discovered IC 4042 = K. 2-31 on 9 May 1896 with the 18-inch refractor at Strasbourg and recorded "F, S, bM."
400/500mm - 17.5" (4/21/90): very faint, extremely small, round. Located in the core of AGC 1656 7.6' E of NGC 4889. Nearby galaxies include IC 4051 3.2' NE and IC 4041 1.6' NNW.
