Max Wolf discovered IC 2853 = W. VII-225, along with IC 2850 and 2857, on a Heidelberg plate taken on 27 Mar 1906. He reported "pB, pS, E in 160°, bM, forms a triangle with 2 stars."
400/500mm - 17.5" (2/28/87): faint, small, oval SSW-NNE, weak concentration. Located just 0.9' SSW of a mag 10 star. A mag 14 star is 0.9' E. First of four brighter galaxies in the IC 698 group with IC 2850 5.1' S and IC 2857 4.8' SE.
