Lewis Swift discovered IC 2560 = Sw. XI-106 on 28 Dec 1897 and reported "eeF; pS; iR; in center of trapezium." His RA is 30 seconds too small, but the identification is certain based on the description. Howe measured a more accurate position in 1899 or 1900, though it was still 1' too far north.
400/500mm - 18" (4/10/04): fairly faint, moderately large, elongated 3:2 SW-NE, 1.4'x0.8', moderate concentration with a small brighter core and much fainter extensions. Nestled within a neat asterism of 5 stars forming a rough rectangle including two mag 12 stars 1.3' NE and 1.9' ENE of center. This Seyfert galaxy (type 2) is a possible outlying member of the Antlia Cluster (ACO S636).
