Max Wolf discovered IC 2398 = W. I-136 on a photographic plate taken on 13 Jan 1901 at the Heidelberg Observatory.

900/1200mm - 48" (4/4/11): moderately bright, oval 5:3 N-S, 30"x18", broad concentration, brighter core. Three mag 12.5-14 stars within 1' cradle the galaxy to the NE, SE and south. Located 2.2' NNW of a mag 10.9 star. The faint planetary Abell 30 lies 8' NNE.
