Stephane Javelle discovered IC 1815 = J. 3-931 on 20 Jan 1898 with the 30-inch refractor at the Nice Observatory. He recorded "F, R, 20" to 25", gbM, mag 14 stellar nucleus."

400/500mm - 17.5" (11/30/91): fairly faint, small, irregularly round, small bright core, stellar nucleus. Located 3.5' ESE of mag 7.5 SAO 55664. Smaller but higher surface brightness than NGC 973 4.5' N.
