DeLisle Stewart discovered IC 1558 = DS 111 on an Arequipa plate from 3 Nov 1898. He recorded "star north, possible spiral, E at 160°."
400/500mm - 17.5" (9/7/96): extremely faint, fairly large, diffuse, very low surface brightness. At times appeared elongated NNW-SSE, but it was very difficult to trace the outer halo due to its low surface brightness. Required averted and was unable to hold the galaxy steadily. Located 3.5' NE of mag 8 SAO 166387.
