Stephane Javelle discovered IC 1405 = J. 1-445 on 5 Nov 1891 . MCG misidentifies MCG +00-55-20 as IC 1406, but the MCG designation applies to IC 1405.

400/500mm - 17.5" (8/8/02): very faint, very small, round. A very faint close double star is just off the NW edge [40" from the center]. Forms a pair with IC 1406 4.2' ESE, which was not seen.

600/800mm - 24" (9/5/18): at 375x; fairly faint, fairly small, round, weak concentration. A mag 13.5/14.5 double star (~8" separation) lies 45" NW. Forms a pair with IC 1406 4.2' SE.
