Lewis Swift discovered IC 1046 = Sw. VII-49 on 11 Jun 1888 and reported "eF; S; R; D * nr f[ollowing] points to it." His position is within 30" of CGCG 337-017 = PGC 52284 and the double star is 3.5' E.
600/800mm - 24" (7/1/19): at 225x and 375x; fairly faint, fairly small, elongated 3:2 or 2:1 E-W, small brighter nucleus. Mottled, irregular appearance, ~36"x20". A ~20" pair of mag 11.7/13.2 stars is 3' E (nearly collinear with the galaxy).
